My Mother`s Lovers

Kathleen, a six-foot tall white woman in Africa, travels around the dark continent bagging big game and bedding men. She shoots tigers, boxes Ernest Hemingway, adopts African children, and mates with a leopard-man. In short, she embodies all the virile, mannish attributes of the colonial powers. By contrast, her son Alexander is a weak, willowy fellow who will grow up to sell cooling systems. His mother`s domineering presence in his life lingers long after her death, particularly in the form of his lover Cindy, a wealthy mixed-race woman and an old friend of his mother. As the colonial powers fall and retreat, the ravaged remnants of the African continent rear their angry heads, and a myriad of cruelties, caused both by Europeans and African alike, threaten to swallow up Alexander`s life.
